Flutist Carmen Maret and guitarist Andrew Bergeron of the Folias Duo celebrate their 2019 summer tour marking sixteen years together as music and life partners.
We’re hitting the road again this 2019 summer tour with 20 + shows in the western U.S. including concerts and milongas (tango dances) in New Mexico, California, Nevada, Oregon and Idaho. We’re calling this summer tour “Postcards” not only because we’ll be playing in a mix of small town venues (museums, libraries, private homes, restaurants, communities centers, wineries) but also because we’re digging out pieces from ten years ago, one from each of our albums together since 2008.
This is our tenth self-booked, self-managed tour, and our repertoire this summer features our favorite compositions from each of our albums including “Waves and Waterfalls,” a piece inspired by the northern shore of Lake Superior from Waterway (2008), “Full Long Nights’ Moon” a piece about night skiing in Ontario from Tango and Snow (2011), “Mamba Guinee” a piece that features west African tambin flute from on Viewpoints (2014) and “Octopus Fantasma,” a chacarera on our most recent release Dreaming to Live (2017). We’ll also be taking a few new pieces on the road such as Carmen’s “Creole Ballet” and Andrew’s piece “Emerson” for alto flute and guitar that you’ll hear on our forth coming release, Delicate Omens, due out this October 2019.
We’ll be driving our Toyota Corolla again, clocking in at our usual 20 hour driving week with an estimated 10,000 miles in two and half months. Our itinerary also includes mostly camping or staying with people along the way. We’ve found this aspect of a DIY approach for a summer tour a truly enlightening experience for understanding ourselves and getting to know more about people who love music and adventure.
In the month of July, we’ve scheduled some intentional creative time to compose, calling it the “Folias Music Sponsored Composing Residency.” We’ll be staying in rustic cabins (no electricity, no running water, no cell service) in central Oregon for four weeks. Our plan is to write the next round of material for flute and guitar that will take us into 2021. It’s a formula that has worked for us for the past three summers: book a cabin, isolate ourselves in a natural environment, and all our musical ideas seem to flow in productive ways.
We hope you will stay in touch during our summer tour so you can see what music we come up with. We’ll also be cooking our own food along the way, so watch out for some delicious pictures (and recipes if we have can find the time and wifi to post on this blog!)
