The thirteen tracks of original compositions and arrangements of Dreaming to Live are performed by the Folias Duo, flutist Carmen Maret and guitarist Andrew Bergeron.
Pointing to their passion for tango, classical music, and Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, the duo has performed tango music since the early 2000’s and here they branch out to showcase the rich folk music of northern Argentina.
Bergeron and Maret also share the work of composing. As they explain in the liner notes for the album, “The music on this album relates to concepts we have been interested in as composers: nature, time, and existence.”
In the twenty-four page booklet that accompanies the album, Maret features an essay of pinhole photos taken with homemade cameras that document the duo’s travels and creative process.
Dreaming to Live is the duo’s first release on their own Folias Music label. The album was recorded at Sono Luminus Studios. Located in a 100 year old, former Episcopal Church in rural Boyce, Virginia the studio’s world class facility and specialization for recording high quality acoustic classical music is showcased through Bergeron and Maret’s performance throughout the album.
What people are saying about Dreaming to Live…
“Maret’s sinuous flute, alto flute, and piccolo playing is a constant delight, while Bergeron’s deft finger-picking makes as strong an impression. The purity of her tone and the unerring precision of his guitar work are an enticing combination, and both repeatedly show themselves to be versatile and accomplished players capable of meeting the music’s formidable challenges.”
“…the players work well together, have excellent technical command and perfect ensemble and a nice timbral timbral range. And both are not afraid of improvising…
“The CD’s 13 tracks of original compositions and arrangements highlights the duo’s passion for classical music, Astor Piazzolla’s works, and tango music—which it has played since the early 2000s—and here showcases the rich folk music of northern Argentina.”
